October 3 marks 25 years since the K 100 and K 100 RS were released at the Paris motor show in1983.

The modern four-cylinder motorcycle was a complete break from the past and took BMW Motorrad into a new era. At that time it was thought that the Boxer models would disappear but the old two-valve motor battled on until 1996 with the Boxer getting a new lease of life with the R 100 RS.

In Australia the K Series was launched on October 22 1983 at the MRA Motorcycle Show at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds. The bike was a big hit with both traditional BMW owners and those riders attracted by the fuel- injected model.

The K Series now is made up of the K 1200 S, K 1200 R and K 1200 GT with the latest inline four, while the K 1200 LT still uses a motor based on the original introduced back in 1983. Twenty-five years on we salute a great motorcycle.
